The mission of the Niagara Falls Water Board (NFWB) is to provide safe and reliable water and wastewater management services to our community in an economical and efficient manner.

Our Vision

The goal of the Niagara Falls Water Board is to become a first class competitive utility in the next five to seven years.

NFWB Fast Facts

  • The Niagara Falls Water Board (NFWB) is a public benefit corporation created in 2002 by a special act of the New York State Legislature.
  • The NFWB has owned and operated the drinking water and wastewater treatment systems and the storm water conveyance facilities since September 25th, 2003. The Niagara Falls Public Water Authority oversees the bonding and financing of the board's assets.
  • The NFWB serves more than 18,400 accounts, including residential and businesses throughout the City of Niagara Falls and some outlying areas.
  • The NFWB owns two treatment plants: the Michael C. O'Laughlin Water Treatment Plant, which treats and delivers an average of 17.9 million gallons per day (mgd) of safe, clean drinking water; and a physical-chemical activated carbon wastewater treatment plant that treats and discharges an average of 32.9 million gallons per day to the lower Niagara River.
  • The NFWB also owns and operates two elevated water storage tanks, several pumping stations, and maintains 550 miles of water and sewer lines throughout its service district.
  • The NFWB has an annual operating budget of $39 million. The organization is financially self-sustaining and pays for all operating expenses from revenues generated through the sale of potable water and wastewater services to its commercial and residential customers.
  • Drinking water and wastewater produced by the NFWB must meet strict quality standards mandated by agencies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Health, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
